How to Convert JPG to PNG Without Losing Quality

Upload a JPG or JPEG to Convert It, keep PNG selected, optionally choose a maximum width or height, and convert. The PNG is encoded without another lossy compression step, but converting cannot restore detail already removed by JPEG compression.

Convert a JPG to PNG

  1. 1Open the JPG to PNG converter and add one or more .jpg or .jpeg files.
  2. 2Leave PNG as the output format. If needed, set one batch maximum width or height; smaller images are not enlarged.
  3. 3Start the conversion and wait for each file to finish.
  4. 4View, download, copy a share link, or send the completed PNG using the available file actions.

What “without losing quality” really means

PNG uses lossless compression, so the PNG encoder does not introduce JPEG-style block artifacts. The source JPG, however, has already been compressed with a lossy process. Soft detail, texture, or color information discarded when that JPG was created is not present for a converter to recover.

The practical benefit is that the new PNG avoids an additional lossy JPEG encoding pass. It is useful for editing, screenshots, graphics workflows, or services that require PNG. It is not a way to increase resolution or make a blurry photograph sharp.

Why the PNG may be larger

Photographs often compress efficiently as JPG because small visual changes are discarded. PNG retains pixel information losslessly, so a photographic PNG can be substantially larger even though it looks the same. A larger output is normal and does not mean extra detail was created.

  • PNG supports transparency, but an ordinary JPG has no transparent pixels to restore.
  • Resizing only reduces dimensions; Convert It does not upscale images.
  • Orientation is applied and source metadata is removed by the current image workflow.

Common mistakes

Renaming .jpg to .png does not convert the file. The bytes remain JPEG data, and applications may reject the mismatched extension. Also avoid repeatedly converting between JPG and other lossy formats if quality matters: each lossy re-encode can introduce another change.

Convert It validates files and processes them server-side using private temporary storage. For more detail about handling and retention, read the Privacy Policy.
